The Museum Foundation Post and Telecommunication was founded in 1995 during the postal reform process in Germany. The historical roots of the Foundation and its institutions go back to the 19th century and the founding of the Imperial Postal Museum in Berlin on the initiative of Postmaster General Heinrich von Stephan. Later, additional post and telecommunication museums were founded. Down the years, these museums had a very eventful history.
When the post and telecommunication services were privatised, the entire collections at the Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg (closed in 2009) and Nuremberg locations were combined under one authority and then, in 1995, transferred to the newly established Museum Foundation Post and Telecommunication.
